Report of the Select Committee on Trade and Industry, Economic Development, Small Business Development, Tourism, Employment and Labour on the World Trade Organization Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies Agreement dated 20 February 2024.

 

The fisheries industry worldwide is undergoing global governance reform. In the main it is to meet United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (14.6) which provides that certain forms of fisheries subsidies which contribute to overcapacity and overfishing should be prohibited and subsidies that contribute to illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, should be eliminated. Further, the National Development Plan advances the environmental sustainability, in particular, sustaining South Africa’s marine ecosystem.

 

The Select Committee on Trade and Industry, Economic Development, Small Business Development, Tourism, Employment and Labour, having considered the request for approval by Parliament on the World Trade Organization’s Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies, recommends that the House, approves the Agreement in terms of Section 231(2) of the Constitution,
