REPORT OF THE PORTFOLIO COMMITTEE ON COOPERATIVE GOVERNANCE AND TRADITIONAL AFFAIRS ON THE PETITION RELATING TO PUBLIC PARTICIPATION AND LEGISLATIVE COMPLIANCE IN A PROPOSED HOUSING DEVELOPMENT IN ALBERTON UNDER THE CITY OF EKURHULENI, DATED 17 JUNE 2020

 

Having considered the petition from Honourable D Bergman (DA), calling on Parliament to investigate public participation and legislative compliance in the proposed housing development in Alberton, the Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs reports as follows:

 

  1. BACKGROUND

 

  1. On 21 August 2019, Honourable Darren Bergman tabled a petition to the Speaker of the National Assembly, on behalf of his Alberton constituency, calling on the Assembly to investigate public participation and legislative compliance in the proposed housing development in the area. The Speaker referred the petition to the Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs for consideration. The Committee has a mandate to exercise oversight over the local sphere of government.

 

  1. In response to the request, the Committee called the City of Ekurhuleni before it on Wednesday 03 June 2020 to receive a briefing on the matter.

 

  1. PRESENTATION

 

Honourable Bergman introduced the petition by reporting that all the involved parties formed a Steering Committee, found consensus, and resolved the matter amicably. It was good ending story of which everyone could be proud.

 

  1. COMMITTEE OBSERVATIONS

The Committee noted and welcomed the good news.
