Medicines and Related Substances Amendment Bill: finalisation

Briefing on the Bill
The Department of Health (DoH) read out the proposed amendments to the Bill. Amendments were made to clauses 1,2,3,4 and 30 of the Bill. [See document]
The new clause which was a substitution for Section 4 of the Act and which had been thoroughly discussed the previous day, provided for the proposed Advisory Committee to the Minister and the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA). The Advisory Committee would be established by the Minister and would advise and act as a consultative body for the Minister and the Authority on matters concerning the corporate governance of the Authority.
Another substantial change that was made was the amendment of Clause 30, which gave the Minister the power to appoint the Appeal Committee instead of giving the power to the Chief Executive Officer of the Authority.
Voting on the Bill
The Chairperson read out the motion of desirability. She then read through the amendments clause by clause.
All committee members were in support of the Bill. The Bill was adopted with the amendments.
