ELECTION OF NEW CHAIRPERSON

Summary of proceedings
1. Introduction:
A special meeting of the Portfolio Committee on Defence was convened for the formal election of the new Chairperson, as required by Rule 131 of the National Assembly Rules.
2. Election of new Chairperson:
The committee secretary called for nominations.
Mr O E Monareng (ANC) nominated Mr F Bhengu. This was seconded by Ms A Van Wyk (ANC).
Mr F Bhengu was unanimously elected as Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Defence, in the absence of other nominations,
3. Remarks by Chairperson elect.
Mr F Bhengu thanked all in attendance and anticipated a fruitful working relationship.
Concerns were expressed over the hospitalisation of outgoing Chairperson, Ms T V Tobias. The committee secretary was requested to arrange a visit to the hospital as well as to forward flowers and a card.
The meeting was adjourned at 15h17
