Report of the Portfolio Committee on Communications on the appointment
of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) Interim Board, dated 02
July 2009:
The
Portfolio Committee on Communications held an inquiry into the South African
Broadcasting Corporation Board in terms of section 15A (1)(b) of the
Broadcasting Act (No 4 of 1999) on 18, 23 and 24 June 2009. Having concluded
the said inquiry, the Committee reported to the National Assembly on 26 June
2009, recommending that the House adopts a resolution recommending to the
appointing authority, the dissolution of the Board. The House adopted the
resolution on 01 July 2009 and instructed the Committee to proceed with the
process of recommending:
(i) five persons for appointment to an interim Board as
contemplated
in section 15A(3)(a) of the Broadcasting Act; and
(ii) one of the members of the interim Board as
the chairperson
and another member as
the deputy chairperson as contemplated in section 15A(4) of the Act.
Having
considered the instruction of the National Assembly, the Committee recommends
that the following persons be appointed to the Interim Board of the SABC:

2.
Dr Phillip Frederick Mtimkulu
3
Ms Libby Lloyd
4.
Mr Leslie Kgopotso Sedibe
5.
Ms Suzanne Vos
The
Committee further recommends that the following persons be designated as
Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson of the Board respectively:
1.
Ms Irene Charnley
2.
Dr Phillip Frederick Mtimkulu
The
Democratic Alliance (DA), Congress of the People (COPE) and Independent
Democrats (ID) voted against the report.
