Re: Public Hearings: National Environmental Management Amendment Bill (36-2007)
Dear Ms. Albertina Kakaza,
Please accept this submission to the Portfolio Committee on Environmental
Affairs and Tourism for inclusion on the agenda at the public hearings on the
National Environmental Management Amendment Bill.
Freshwater invertebrates
1. The proposal that two species are removed from their present listing and
placed in the list of EXEMPTED ALIEN SPECIES. These are Cherax tenuimanus, the
Marron Crayfish and Cherax quadricarinatus, the Redclaw crayfish
As both these have been farmed historically with no detrimental effects for
many years.
2. The proposal that two species are removed from their present listing and
placed in the list of INVASIVE SPECIES FOR WHICH A PERMIT IS REQUIRED UNDER
CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES. These are
Procambarus clarkii, the Red Swamp crayfish and Cherax destructor, the Yabby
Due to concerns of eradication and disease transmission
I would like to verbally give my reasons in briefly, but in more detail, with
supporting evidence for the above at the Public Hearing.
Thanking you in advance, Yours sincerely,
Adrian Piers.
