Ex officio in the context of board members
"Ex officio" is a Latin term meaning "by virtue of office or
position.". Ex-officio members of boards and committees, therefore, are
persons who are members by virtue of some other office or position that they
hold. If it was not for the other official position that these persons hold they
would not have become board members. It follows that if the member of the Board
ceases to hold the official position he or she also looses membership and the
new holder of that official position becomes the board member.
The ex officio members of boards or committees have exactly the same rights and
privileges as do all other members unless it is expressly provided to the
contrary in any aspect.
