In the Past Race and Gender Determined People’s Dignity, their Access to Opportunities and the Realisation of Human Rights.

In the New Democracy, the Government is

committed to addressing this historical legacy by

ensuring equal opportunities for women, men, girls

and boys in all spheres of life, including the

workplace, the community and in the family.

WHAT IS MAINSTREAMING GENDER FOR GENDER EQUALITY?

Mainstreaming gender for gender equality involves ensuring that all political, economic and social decisions and actions are critically analysed for their differentiated impact on women, men, girls and boys and remedying any impact that would perpetuate gender inequality. This analysis needs to be an integral dimension of the design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of policies and programmes, to ensure that women, men, girls and boys benefit equally.

WHY MAINSTREAM GENDER FOR GENDER EQUALITY?

Mainstreaming gender for gender equality ensures a comprehensive approach to transforming gender relations in the workplace, the community and the home, with the ultimate goal of achieving gender equality. Mainstreaming gender also enhances our country’s compliance with Developmental, Transformational and Policy obligations, as well as enhancing personal and organisational growth, by fostering maximum use of human capital.

THE ROLE OF THE PUBLIC SERVICE

South Africa as a Nation has taken a stance that gender equality is not only a human rights issue, but also a developmental issue.   The public service is one of the vehicles for achieving gender equality. A transformed public service that is equally responsive to the needs of all will contribute to delivering on our Government’s promise of ‘A Better Life for All’.
