SOUTH AFRICAN SPORTS CONFEDERATION AND OLYMPIC COMMITTEE

13 March 2007

FROM: MR. MOSS MASHISI SASCOC PRESIDENT

TO MR. . M KOMPHELA :CHAIRPERSON: PC ON SPORT AND RECREATION

Dear Mr. Komphela,

Following your request to a meeting with the Parliamentary Committee for Sport and our subsequent telephonic conversation, I would like to express our sincere apology for not attending today’s briefing. This was a result of us being unable to secure flights to Cape Town this morning for Ms, Hajera Kejee and Mr. Les Williams. The earliest flight we could secure was at 12h00.

Nevertheless, I would like to draw your attention that the Membership Commission has been tasked with reviewing our Membership criteria taking the following into account :

·         The relevant International Affiliation.

·         The recognition by the IOC and all other .International Macro Sport Bodies.

·         International trends regarding affiliations to NF's particularly around Karate, Baton Twirling, Touch Rugby, Drum Majorettes and others.

It is with the above in mind, where we would be able to recognize and forge unity amongst National Federations.

The recommendations of the Membership Committee will be tabled with the Board in the next three months, and our Genera' Assembly for approval.

You will appreciate the importance or ensuring our Membership criteria is based on sound governance principles, which will indeed assist in eliminating problems and disputes of NF's with SASCOC.

The Bard of SASCOC arrived at a decision in consultation with the Minister of Sport and Recreation to place Karate under curatorship.

This decision was ratified by our General Assembly together with the reviewing of the Membership criteria.

In view of the above, It is recommended that we hold the Karate issue in abeyance until the recommendations on the Membership criteria is finalized.

We will keep you informed of developments in this regard.

Kind regards

MR. MOSS MASHISI SASCOC PRESIDENT
