TEMPORARY BRIDGES FOR EMERGENCIES

 

 

1. SUBJECT

The deployment of temporary bridges in case of emergencies such as that experienced during the summer 2000 floods.

2. PURPOSE

To inform the Committee of relevant facts regarding the deployment of temporary bridges.

    - Mozambique : 5000m to the Ministry of Works

    - Zambia : 30 bridges to the Disaster Management Unit

    - Botswana : 10 bridges to the Ministry of Works

    - Kenya : 80 bridges to the Ministry of Works

    : 3 bridges for emergency stock

    : 3 multi-span bridges for Kenya Wildlife

    - Tanzania : 20 bridges to the Ministry of Works

    : 1 bridge for Selous National Park

    - Uganda : 10 bridges to the Ministry of works under

    El-Nino (World Bank) emergency

    - Zimbabwe : 2 bridges to the DDF (Rural Ministry)

    3.3 Steps taken to address the situation

    4. FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS

    During early 2002 it was estimated that an amount of R17 million for initial procurement and a revisable annual amount of R1 million will be required for the following configurations:

    6 x 18,3m; 4 x 24,4m; 2 x 30,5m; and 2 x 36,6m bridges as well as for three launching and erection sets.

    This implies the erection of eighteen bridges of spans 10m to 36m, while the simultaneous deployment / withdrawal of three bridges will be possible.
