INFORMAL SETTLEMENT UPGRADING PILOT PROJECTS
Purpose
To inform the Portfolio Committee of the developments around the Informal Settlement Upgrading Projects in the Northern Cape
Projects
NC has identified two areas for the pilot projects
- Lerato Park - Kimberley
- 2. Ou Boks - Colesberg
Lerato Park falls within the Galeshewe urban development node of So Plaatje Municipality
Ou Boks is situated at the entrance to Colesberg and creates unsafe living conditions.

Conclusion
- NC difficult to implement projects without funding
- Limited budget , as well as committed housing projects makes the allocation of funding to pilots projects very complex
- Staff shortages at the Department
- Current staff dedicated to the current running housing projects
- Difficult to redirect actions onto the new programme
- Beneficiaries and other role players at municipal level do not want to spent time on planning and proper socio-economic surveys'
- Focus on the housing part of the
- Policy is structured to deal with project units and more
- The Northern Cape does not have informal settlements of this size
- The province therefore has to adapt the policy order to soot the situation
