Project Objective

The objective of the N2 Gateway Pilot Project is to test the method of comprehensively addressing the housing and development needs of communities in informal settlements along the N2 in an affordable, sustainable and integrated manner.

The Discourse

• The a Shift to demand > supply driven delivery

• Discourage 'one-house-one-plot' approach
• Focus on options: mixed densities, walk-ups, upgrades, rental etc
• Promote functional & racial integration
• Insist on mobility, access, activities > simply provision of roads, facilities
• Promote 'sustainable human' settlements (safe, green, lively etc)

• Not just numbers of units, but
• WHERE and HOW housing built can help combat poverty e.g.

- Close to urban core & access routes gives mobility, facilities & opportunity for trade

- Labour intensive/EPWP, linking big & small (SEE, women) contractors, design for work

• Energy efficient materials, design & layout saves money for the poor and the planet for future generations

• UISP Phase 1-3 have funded infrastructure of Joe Slovo phase1
