GAUTENG DEPARTMENT OF SPORT, RECREATION ARTS AND CULTURE
THE ENHANCEMENT OF COMPETITIVE SPORT THROUGH THE DEVELOPMENT AND PREPARATION OF 2010 SPORTING FACILITIES
Goals
SRAC identified the need to address the following two overall goals:
- To become the centre of competitive sport in South Africa ( medium to long term)
- To ensure that Gauteng plays a pivotal role during the hosting of the 2010 World Cup (short to medium term)
- The 1st goal provides overall direction to all sports within the province whilst the 2nd goal prioritises spending in the short to medium term goal because a "hard target" has been set by the commitments made in the 2010 Bid Book.
Objectives
- To create legacy projects which will serve the population of Gauteng beyond 2010;
- To establish the foundation of a multi-tiered 2010 strategy or agenda for Gauteng;
- To address key requirements for making Gauteng training venues more attractive to international –(during the World Cup) and local teams ( before and after the World Cup – commitments have already been secured for the adoption of these venues by local PSL and Mvela league teams);
- To promote competitive sport within the region by creating suitable infrastructure for the elevation of the sport, its participant’s and its supporters;
- To provide suitable infrastructure which will make sustainable property management and maintenance structures possible.
Infrastructure Focus Areas (Stadia)

- ELLIS PARK
- LOFTUS
- RAINBOW
Infrastructure Focus Areas (Stadia)
1.Game Venues
- According to the Bid Book potential venues for games during 2010 are:
- FNB Stadium , Ellis Park, Stadium, Loftus Stadium, Rainbow Junction Stadium;
- Predominantly private owned
There has been substantial investment in their maintenance and upkeep
- Established private sector institutions involved in management and operations
- Close to supporting infrastructure
- Planning for the upgrading of these stadia has largely been completed
- Public sector support is predominantly required in terms of setting up a spatial development framework for the areas around these stadia and for providing appropriate supporting infrastructure e.g. for transportation, etc

2.Training Venues-Key Focus Area
- Potential venues for use by visiting 2010 WC teams are:
- HM Pitje, George Thabe, Sinaba, Rand, Makhulong, Mehlareng, Vosloorus, Atteridgeville, Germiston, Pam Brink , Orlando, Eldorado Park, Dobsonville, Millpark , University of Johannesburg, Alexandra, Pildich, Giant and Caledonian.
- These venues are situated in the three (3) metros Ekurhuleni, Johannesburg and Tshwane as well as in Sedibeng District Municipality.
- Public sector support wants to target assistance in the establishment of bodies that will ultimately operate and maintain the facilities.
- Little or no private sector investment has occurred at these facilities. These facilities need additional investment linked to economic development i.e. retail facilities and transforming stadia into hubs.
- After the 2010 World Cup the venues will be utilised by teams in the PSL and Mvela League and will form cornerstones of sporting excellence.
