DIPVETNURS STUDENT ADMISSION POLICY & PROCEDURES FOR ADMISSION TO THE 2006 ACADEMIC YEAR

INTRODUCTION

The Faculty of Veterinary Science views student selection as a key component of its endeavours to meet the veterinary needs of the country and the specific requirements of higher education legislation. To this end the Faculty states its intent to actively recruit and select students to ensure that the student body will ultimately reflect national demographics (77% Black; 11% White; 9% Coloured; 3% Asian).**

 

PROCEDURES FOR 2006

1 The composition of the Selection Committee for the 2006 selection round will be determined by the Faculty Council. Interview panel(s) will be appointed by the Selection Committee. Interviews will be conducted in September/October and will last approximately 15 minutes.

In allocating places, the Selection Committee will consider ranked candidates within race groups and allocate places in categories 1 and 2 according to national demographics. Places not filled within a group will revert to remaining applicants in that category, on merit. Places not filled in a specific category will be re-allocated to other categories at the discretion of the Selection Committee.

3 Selection into the first year

3.1 Category 1 - Candidates who have obtained matriculation exemption without completed further study with a pass mark of at least 40% in Mathematics and either Biology or Physical Science at the Higher Grade or 50% at the Standard Grade.

3.1.1 Provisional selection of candidates is done on the basis of the M-score achieved at the end of Grade 12, or Grade 11 if the candidate is still in Matric (minimum M-score of 12), for Mathematics, Biology or Physical Science and the four best remaining subjects according to the table below. Students with five subjects may also be considered.

      1. Candidates with DipVetNurs as the only or first choice programme will be considered first.

3.1.3 Candidates with an M-score >16 are automatically placed with due consideration of the number of places. A number of candidates equal to approximately 150% of the remaining places will be identified for an interview. The final selection score comprises the M-score and interview (70:30) and the remaining number of students are selected accordingly.

 

3.2 Category 2 - Candidates who have completed at least one year of training at a tertiary institution

3.2.1 Candidates with DipVetNurs as the only or first choice programme will be considered first.

3.2.2 Provisional selection is done on the basis of the average percentage obtained for all full years of study (overall minimum 55%).

3.2.3 Candidates with an academic average >70% are automatically placed with due consideration of the number of places. A number of candidates equal to approximately 150% of the remaining places will be identified for an interview in September/October.

3.2.4 A final selection of the required number of candidates takes place based on the average academic achievement as stated above, including the final examination results of the preceding year and the result of an interview. The final selection score comprises 70% of the academic mark and 30% of the interview score.

3.2.5 South African citizens studying at a foreign university will be considered for selection after evaluation of the relevant syllabi.

 

3.3 Category 3 - Repeating students

3.3.1 Selection occurs on the basis of re-application, an interview and the academic average of the preceding year.

3.3.2 Places not filled in this category will revert to other categories at the discretion of the Selection Committee.

 

3.4 Category 4 – Candidates not in possession of South African citizenship. In cases where one or both parents are South African citizens, or where the candidate or one of the parents has dual citizenship, the candidate will resort under the relevant preceding categories.

3.3.1 Selection is based on the same criteria set for South African citizens in categories 1 and 2. Preference will be given to candidates from Africa south of the Sahara, particularly from countries without a veterinary faculty.

3.3.2 A prescribed test of English as a foreign language and a personal interview must be done at either a South African Embassy/Mission or at Onderstepoort in September/October before the final selection of candidates takes place. Candidates not conversant with English may be required to do additional English courses as a condition of registration.

3.3.3 Places not filled in Category 4 are transferred to other categories at the discretion of the Selection Committee.

 

4 General requirements

4.1 Upon acceptance of the place awarded to them, selected candidates must pay a portion of the class fees or must make alternative arrangements acceptable to the Registrar for this. If, after acceptance of his/her application by the University of Pretoria the candidate withdraws, written application may be made for a partial repayment of the deposit. However such requests will only be considered in exceptional cases.

4.2 The annual closing date for applications is June 30. Late applications will only be considered under exceptional circumstances.

Note: The above admission policy and procedures apply specifically to the 2005-2006 procedure and would require annual updating.

 

 

 

 

INTERVIEWS FOR SELECTION AND ADMISSION TO THE

DIPVETNURS PROGRAMME

 

 

  1. Applicants invited for interviews will be provided with a concise document covering the scope of veterinary nursing as a career opportunity, the study programme and an estimate of the financial implications.
  2. Each candidate will be required to prepare and verbally present a motivation in support of his/her reason for seeking admission to the programme.
  3. During the presentation, clarifying questions may be posed by the panel members.
  4. Each applicant will be evaluated on their verbal communication skills, verbal comprehension skills, motivation and exposure to animals and/or veterinary related activities according to 5 below.
  5. Each aspect will be evaluated separately according to the following rating:

  7. A final combined rating will then be calculated as the average of the scores obtained in 4 above for use in the final calculation of a selection score (SS) as follows:
