BSc (VETERINARY BIOLOGY) STUDENT ADMISSION POLICY & PROCEDURES : 2006

INTRODUCTION

The BSc (Veterinary Biology) degree is a prerequisite for admission to the BVSc degree programme offered in the Faculty of Veterinary Science. The Faculty of Veterinary Science views student selection as a key component of its endeavours to meet the veterinary needs of the country and the specific requirements of higher education legislation. To this end the Faculty of Veterinary Science has stated its intent to actively recruit and select students to ensure that the student body will ultimately reflect national demographics.

PROCEDURES FOR 2006

  1. The composition of the Selection Committee for the 2006 selection round will be determined by the Faculty Boards of the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences and the Faculty of Veterinary Science.

TOTAL 135

A total number of 135 students will be allowed to enrol for the third year of the BSc (Veterinary Biology) degree. In allocating places, the Selection Committee will consider ranked candidates within race groups and allocate places in Categories 1, 3, 4 and 5 according to national demographics. Places not filled within a group will revert to remaining applicants in that category on merit.

Places not filled in Categories 2 - 5 will be allocated to category 1 in such a manner that the total intake does not exceed 135 students.

3. Selection in the various categories:

 

3.1 Category 1 – South African citizens who are, at the time of the application, in the process of completing the prescribed second year modules for admission to the BSc (Veterinary Biology) degree of the University of Pretoria.

      1. Ranking is done on the basis of the weighted average percentage obtained in all the core modules of the relevant second year of study.

3.1.2 Only candidates who have passed all prescribed modules will be considered.

3.1.3 Candidates will be placed according to the principles and number of places provided for in paragraph 2 above.

3.1.4 Remaining candidates will be placed on a waiting list.

 

3.2 Category 2 – Foreign candidates who are, at the time of the application, in the process of completing the prescribed second year modules for admission to the BSc (Veterinary Biology) degree of the University of Pretoria.

      1. Ranking is done on the same basis as for category 1.

3.2.2 Preference will be given to candidates from neighbouring countries without a Faculty of Veterinary Science.

3.2.3 Candidates will be placed according to the number of places provided for in paragraph 2 above.

 

3.3 Category 3 – Candidates with a completed related BSc or who are in the process of doing so and have already completed all the required second year modules.

3.3.1 Ranking is done on the same basis as for category 1.

3.3.2 Further ranking will be done on the basis of the average percentage obtained in all modules of the final year of study of the relevant degree programme.

3.3.3 Candidates will be placed according to the principles and number of places provided for in paragraph 2 above.

 

3.4 Category 4 – Candidates with a completed related BSc and/or postgraduate qualification or who are in the process of doing so but still need to complete second year modules.

      1. Ranking is done on the basis of credits assigned for completed qualifications and the level of achievement obtained.
      2. Candidates will be placed according to the principles and number of places provided for in paragraph 2 above.
      3. Allocation of a place is provisional subject to the candidate obtaining an academic performance of 60% in the second year module(s).
      4. The place is confirmed once the academic achievement has been confirmed.

 

3.5 Category 5 – Candidates who have previously enjoyed selection status in the BVSc II programme

      1. Candidates will be placed provided they pass all outstanding second year modules.
    1. Repeating students
      1. Students who are unsuccessful at the end of the year will have to apply for re-admission.
      2. A very limited number of such students may be admitted on merit to repeat the year once only.
