PROGRESS REPORT ON THE NATIONAL COUNCIL FOR LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SERVICES (NCLIS)

INTRODUCTION

The National Council for Library and Information Services (NCLIS) is established in terms of the NCLIS Act 6 Of 2001. The act is available at http://www.info.gov.za/gazette/acts/2001 /a6-01 .pdf


The object of NCLIS is to advise the Minister of Arts and Culture and the Minister of Education on matters relating to library and information services.


One of the significant functions of NCLIS also includes the development of policies, principles and criteria that should govern the allocation of public funds for library and information services.

6. CONCLUSION

In terms of the NCLIS Act 6 of 2001 section 5(l)(d) and (e), the National Librarian and one member nominated by the Library Information Association of South Africa (LIASA) are two of the ex officio members of NCLIS.


Since NCLIS resorts under the Department of Arts and Culture, I hereby submit this brief progress report to the Portfolio Committee in order to keep the Committee members up-to date on the activities of NCLIS.


Thank you for inviting me to brief the Portfolio Committee on the activities of the National Library of South Africa, and for the opportunity to present this progress report on the National Council for Library and Information Services.

3. INAUGURAL MEETING

NCLIS was launched on the 11 March 2004 at the National Library of South Africa's Centre for the Book in Cape Town. The inaugural speech was delivered by the then Deputy Minister of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology, Ms Buyelwa Sonjica. 3.6 Joint Symposuirn with DAC on the Cost of the Culture of Reading -16 & 17 September 2004

3.7 Symposium on the Cost of a Culture of Reading in Alternative Formats for Blind and Print-Disabled Readers. Jointly hosted by the Department of Arts and Culture and National Council for Library and Information Services in collaboration with the South African Library for the Blind

(Blindlib) 20 to 21 January 2005

3.8 The next meeting of NCLIS will take place on 10 and 11 March 2005

The mission of NCLIS is to provide strategic leadership and advocacy for literacy, a culture of reading and writing, innovation and open access to information.
