Key Highlights
2003/4 KEY HIGHLIGHTS
- Geoscience ic Mapping Program
= Geological Mapping Program
= Geochemical Mapping Program
= Geophysical Mapping Program
Other Programs
National Mining Promotion System
= Completed the development of cadastre system for the Department of Minerals and Energy – for the management of exploration and mining rights
- Reduction of ingress of surface water into gold mines and addressing environmental problems
– Randfontein decant water pumped in Robinson Lake
[PMG note: picture not included]
- Magnetotelluric Traverses
= One of world largest magnetotelluric traverses was conducted
= Will provide a better understanding of the deeper composition of the earth and how diamonds pipes form
- Industrial Mineral Study
= Investigating Geology of Karroo in Delmas area - to identify areas that could be suitable for coal mining
- Project/s continuing within the Karroo basin
Other Programs – Poverty Eradication
- Small - Scale mining
= Continued to provide support to smm through the NSC
: 1 8 Deposits were assessed
: 2 projects promising
=> Clay brick Manufacturing -Bathlabile
=> Slate - Ohrigstad
- Overburden Clay at Sishen
- Mineral Resources Maps of Poverty Nodes
– Establishment of a new Framework to manage and promote small-scale mining
- National Core Library
= Repository of borehole core obtained during exploration and mining
= It is a resource of considerable value for future geological research
= 1800 boreholes are stored with cumulative depth of 520 km
- Develop a new Mineral Promotion Strategy for South Africa
= Prospectivity Areas
= Commodity Resources/Reserve Assessment
eg Gold, PG Ms or C oal (Witbank basin - for amme)
- Geoscience Museum and Collection
= Continued to manage the Geoscience Museum, CGS houses 29 000 gemstones and rock specimen - 9 000 are at the museum
African Cooperation
- Hosted an International training course on seismology, Hazard Assessment and Risk Mitigation
= 32 Students from twenty African states and Middle East participated
- Lesotho
= Collected 8 000 soil samples covering almost the entire Lesotho
= Currently being analyzed for 23 elements
= Geochemical maps will be compiled - identify mineral prospectivity areas
- Mozambique
= Published a Handbook on Mineral Reaources of Mozambique
=> Funded by WorId Bank
= Compiled a Metallogenic map of Mozambicue
- Kalahari Basin
= Comprehensive research project on the stratigraphy, palaeoclimate, drainage and tectonic development of the Kalahari Basin - Inveatigation of rocks underneath the Kalahari Desert

New strategy for CGS
– New strategy put in place
– Refocuses the organisation on six scientific thrusts
New Strategy: Six Thrusts
– Geoscience Mapping
– Minerals Development
– Water Geosciences
– Engineering Geosciences
– Environmental Geosciences
– Education and Information
New Strategy
– The choice of our programs is guided by the 7 focus areas
CONCLUSION: INTERNAL CHALLENGES
– AGEING EQUIPMENT
= Average age of equipment = 15 years
= Some instruments are 30 years old – Need to be replaced at huge costs
= Will use some of our investment to replace equipment over time
- RETENTION OF SKILLS AND EXPANDING SKILLS BASE
- HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT
– Development of Black & Women Geoscientists
