5. PROGRAMMES RUN BY INMATES

An external organisation called Khulisa has trained 17 HIV/Aids Peer Educators and 15 Drug Peer Counsellors at Rustenburg Correctional Centre. Since the out roll of the HIV/Aids programme starting in January 2004 up to now a total of 201 inmates were taken through the programme. Inmates graduated on the 21st of September 2004 and will start with the out roll during October 2004.

6. PROGRAMMES PRESENTED BY EXTERNAL ORGANISATIONS

AREPP Theatre for Life presented a show to a total of 230 inmates at Rustenburg Correctional Centre. The show focussed on burning issues like: Sex, peer pressure, gender roles, HIV/Aids, condoms and masturbation.

An organisation with the name of "Never give up" presented a programme where a total 82 inmates from the Rustenburg CC were involved. The aim of the programme is to inspire ordinary people to do extraordinary things.

8.2 PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES

Currently the Rustenburg Area is having 3 vacant posts for psychologists. No psychological services are presented to inmates within the Rustenburg Area. This is a serious need that has to be addressed.

8.3 RELIGIOUS CARE

Religious Care Services is available at all three Centres within our area and includes the availability of voluntary and Section 7 religious workers whom present religious care programmes during formal church services, group sessions and individual interviews to address specific problems. (The exact number of inmates involved in each of the different religious care programmes is not included in this report because the Coordinator: Religious Care is currently attending a work session).

9. CONCLUSION

With the above-mentioned information we tried to give you a view on the availability of services within the Rustenburg Area. It however needs to be mentioned that the high number of vacant posts with regard to specialised services is creating a serious problem as it is having a negative impact on the number of inmates that can be involved in Development and Care programmes.
