Proposals for Portfolio Committee Provincial Visits:

The proposals is that the Committee visits four projects, this in order to ensure that the visit is effective and ensures that Members can fully interact on matters related to projects. The proposals are also, that the Committee spends three days in each of the four provinces.

Proposed Projects (Restitution):

As restitutions is entering the finalisation phase, it is proposed that the visit focuses on restitution, rather than on land reform, as a visit for projects related to land reform can be understand at a later stage.

Day 1:

KwaDindi Farmers Association Nearest town: Pietermaritzburg. The improvement of the grazing areas through stone packing, fencing, veld management practices.

Engadini Land Trust Outside Pietermaritzburg

Extent: 127 hectares

Number of claimants: 11 claimants

Activities: Alternative land restoration Diary farm with approximately 100 milking cows. Good agricultural land for cash crop production such as mielies, and vegetables.

Day 2:

Bergville Soil Acidity Project. The nearest town is Bergville. Objectives: Aims at generating and diffusing new, appropriate technologies for local farmers in order to address soil degradation for increasing farm productivity.

Bjatladi (Zebedelia Citrus Estate)

Location: About 40-45 km outside Pietersburg

Extent: 5 973 hectares 30% of shares in operating company

Activities: An operating company has been formed and a lease agreement drawn up between the operating company: Zebediela Citrus Estate Pty. Ltd. and the Bjatladi CPA.

Largest in the Southern hemisphere, currently focused on orange production. The operating company plans on expanding the operation to including lemons and table grapes and cattle farming.

Extent: 1484 agricultural land

  1. Lwatshatshimu Landcare. The nearest town is Venda. Objectives of the project are:
    • Control excessive soil erosion
    • Improve access roads to farmers fields
    • Encourage a conversion of land use from maize to fruit trees
