INDUCTION PROGRAMME

Target: Members of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Trade and Industry and Members of the Select Committee dealing with Trade and Industry issues.

Venue: Day 1 New dti campus – Pretoria and Day 2 site visits in Pretoria and Johannesburg

Positioning: This induction programme forms part of a broader parallel programme of the EMU (Parliamentary and Cabinet Services Unit). The parallel programme will run for several months and includes multiple information sessions on different aspects of the department and the economy.

Day one

Aim of the day: To give new and returning members of the committees and overview of the dti and how it works. The objective would be to ensure that the relationship between the committees and the dti is positive and constructive from the start of their term of office. In order not to overload the members with too much information it is necessary that broad strategy and high level positions are given, although it should be ensured that the information is substantive. For those members that are interested in learning more about the dti and the economy, handouts will be given with relevant information as well as who to contact in the dti.

Opening and Welcome by Minister, Deputy Minister and Director-General. Focus of presentations: Overview of the last five years and outcomes of the last Cabinet Lekgotla. Includes an opportunity for questions and answers.

2.

11:00 – 12:30 (1.5 hours)

Short presentation on the objectives of the dti, and provide an overview of dti strategic plans and the dti’s budget for 2004/2005. Presentations should also include the dti flagship programmes as well as a question and answer session. Presentations to be made by the Director-General and Head of Strategy.

12:30 –13:00 (30 min)

Overview of the dti’s legislation and a presentation on the legislative programme for 2004/2005. Present a booklet of past dti legislation. By DDG: CCRD

13:00 – 14:00 (1 hour)

Working Lunch and briefing by DDG:GSSSD on the new building including new ways of working in the dti (20 min).

Invite all DDGs to the lunch and ask them to introduce themselves and the division that they represent.

5.

14:00 – 16:30

Tour of the new building by DDG: GSSSD and DDG: Marketing. This is to be combined with a briefing on the dti’s products and services and how to access the dti’s products and services. Included in the tour is a video of the dti as well as the location of the resource centre (that they will have access to) and the dti call centre.

Cocktail function with Minister, Deputy Minister, and DG

Day 2

Aim of the day: To give members a practical sense of how the dti products and services work by taking them to see big and small businesses as well as introducing them to select COTI institutions.

The day will start at 08:30 for 09:00 from the dti campus and will be co-ordinated by TISA, TEO and the EMU. The Marketing Division (Media unit) will also be included in some of the sessions so that the visits can be reported on.
