MANDATE OF THE COMMITTEE:
The mission of the Committee is to ensure that Parliament gets value for money spent for the purpose of building houses. The committee will continue to encourage visible housing delivery and adherence to better quality of housing units.
The vision of the Committee is to work with all relevant stakeholders willing to participate in the building of houses and assist the department in its constitutional imperative and mandate of providing everyone with an access to adequate housing.

CHAIRPERSONS OVERVIEW:
The committee has been monitoring the implementation of the legislation passed. This has been done by undertaking visits to provinces and public hearings in parliament. We have been able to share our experience by attending conferences. The housing comprehensive plan and the planned N2 Gateway has been a milestone in the work of the committee. The committee will make sure that the implementation of the plan enhances the committee s strategic plan which is in line with the state of the nation address by the president.
CORE OBJECTIVES:
The priority areas for the Committee are:
To process new legislation.
To facilitate oversight functions over the Department of Housing, with a view to ascertain their strategic plan and priorities.
To perform oversight functions over the Department of Housing with a view to assess the provision of human settlement in provinces.
To perform oversight functions over the housing support institutions in order to ascertain their fulfillment of mandate.
To perform oversight functions with other relevant departments who are central in the provision of houses e.g. local government.
To facilitate the access of women in housing and people with disabilities as building contractors.
To draw from international best practises how the housing delivery has been dealt with e.g. UN Habitat and international visits and exchange programmes.

4.2.2 International / National Visits:
International Visits:
The committee has not been able to undertake any of the planned international visits since 2001. All requests have been turned down.
National Visits:
The Chairperson attended the South African Women in Dialogue (SAWID) Forum held in Pretoria, between 30 June to 4 July, 2004.
Two Committee members attended the 2nd WSSD Summit in Johannesburg, between 30 June to 4 July, 2004.
The Committee held a bosberaad on the Committees Strategic Plan and budget between 2-3 August, 2004.
The Committee participated in the National Housing Imbizo in Khayelitsha, convened by the Western Cape Housing Department on 11 August, 2004.
The Committee undertook the provincial visit to Gauteng province, between 11-15 October, 2004.
The Committee participated in the "Kenneth Kaunda Work Project 2004" in building a house in Mamelodi, Pretoria, between 24-26 November, 2004.
