STATUS OF WOMAN PROJECTS DONE IN 2003/2004 BY THE DEPARTMENT OFMINERALS AND ENERGY

KGABANE

PURPOSE

The purpose is to assist rural craft women to add value to their craft by mixing precious 'minerals in to their products. So as to increase the price in order to achieve sustainability.

ACHIEVEMENTS IN 2003

· Groups of women were established and set up to work as a bawdiness to manufacture precious minerals.

5 Groups in KwaZulu-Natal

9 Groups in Eastern Cape

1 Group in North West

1 Group in Mpumalanga

· The training has been done both in their local communities and at MINTEK.

· 143 women have gone through the process! some groups have begun to generate income - on average R 1 000.00 per month.

WOMEN IN OIL AND ENERGY SOUTH AFRICA (WOESA)

PURPOSE

To expose and build capacity, so those women can be empowered to participate in the Energy Sector.

ACHIEVEMENTS IN 2003

· Ran seven provincial workshops and road shows to prepare for the PETROSA deal. Namely:

-Eastern Cape

-Western Cape

-Mpumalanga

-Free State

-Limpopo

-Gauteng

· 20 women participated in a ME ETI course which focused on business opportunities in the Energy sector and how women must position themselves for the opportunities.

· There was a Renewable Energy focus on this year two workshops were held. One in KwaZulu-Natal at Ipiva Lodge which is run on Renewable Energy (solar) - 20 women representing all provinces participated.

· A joint TWIB and DME Renewable Energy work was held in the Eastern Cape in Umtata and a tour to Hluleka to see hybrid Energy system about 25 women attended some from Gauteng also attended.

· A workshop on nuclear was organized and held to launch Women in Nuclear South Africa (WINSA) on 1~15 August The main focus is to give information and make sure information is available to the general public

There is also a need to get the youth to participate and get educated in the sector, and need to attract women to participate in nuclear-related fields.

· A strong membership drive was run as to start creating a database of women.

South African Women in Mining Association (SAWIMA)

PURPOSE

To expose and build capacity, so that women can be empowered to participate in the Mining Sector.

ACHIEVEMENTS IN 2003

· The focus has been on beneficiation and five groups are well into the process of setting up their jewellery businesses.

· 20 Women have participated in the MEETI course which focused on business opportunities in the mining sector and how to prepare.

TWIB - DME

PURPOSE

To recognize, appreciate and motivate women to use technology in enhancing efficiency and effectiveness in their businesses.

ACHIEVEMENTS IN 2003

· The focus this year was on women in Renewable Energy and Jewellery

· The DME working in partnership with the National TWIB office held one workshop on each sector and took the women to a jewellery school at Harmony Jewellery School and Hybrid Renewable Energy Project in Hluleka.

· The recognition award was done at Mabatho and was to recognize women who have made in Roads into the jewellery and the Renewable Energy sector. The event was done in partnership with the Premiers Office and Economic Development Office in Mabatho. About 2oo women from all over South Africa attended.
