EASTERN CAPE: CHOLERA OUTBREAK

The first two cases reported on 23 December 2002, 1 case from Ross Mission & another case from Mxambule NIqanduli , both cases in O.R,Tambo District Municipality.

On 5' January 2003, the cases started rising to sixty four (64) per day. Buhlungwana village was the area most affected.

The area was visited by the MEC for Health and a Rehytation Centre was established .Case dropped to twelve (12) per day.

On the 14 February 2003, New outbreak erupted at Chris Hani District Municipal , Ndexa village under Qurnanco clinic. Ministers Kasrils and Manto Tshabalala - Msimang visited the :affected areas on 17 February 2003.

The hotspot
· At the Peak of the Epidemic up to + 100 cases reported per Local
service area over a 24 hour period i.e. Intsika yethu LSA - 102 cases
on 17/02/03 Nyandeni LSA 101 cases on 12/03/03

The number of cases is decreasing - mainly as a result of interventions/ responses taken e.g.

Establishment of Provincial & Local JOCs

Good cooperation I interaction between the Local Authority I Health and DWAF officials in the JOCs.

Prompt investigations undertaken by outreach teams

Temporary water supply - trucks and tankers

Temporary sanitation - chemical toilets

Health Promo don / Education - phamphlets/ posters I teams in the field ( health & clinical teams)

Temporary rehydration centres

Hired twenty (20) vehicles to reach areas - used by health & clinical team

Semi permanent deployment of 10 additional motor vehicles
Spring protection

Temporary sanitation and water supply at large gatherings (funerals)
