Project Description

Youth Service Project in Care and Counselling for people affected by HIV AIDS.

Young people who have previously been volunteering their time provide counselling and home based care to people requesting assistance at public hospitals and clinics.

Objectives/Results

The outcomes of the programme are proposed as follows :

  • 25 youth will counsel and care for approximately 1500 HIV+ community members over a 12 month period.
  • 5 youth will supervise the above work, and will ensure the 5 satellite offices are operational during the same period of time.
  • All 30 young people will receive approximately 200 hours of training over the year, which will result in their ability to counsel and care for people living with HIV and AIDS, and mean that they gain some of the credits necessary for auxiliary care courses.
  • 50% of the youth will be placed within CAR as either field workers or team leaders within 3 months of programme completion. We will endeavour to place 25% with other organisations, and assist 25% in beginning their own income-generation /entrepreneurship process.
  • All 30 will receive ongoing lifeskills training in self-awareness, communication skills, problem-solving skills, team-work, conflict-resolution, leadership skills and job-related skills, resulting in a demonstrated improvement in relationship skills as measured qualitatively by staff observation and client feedback.
  • All 30 will be required to increase positive community perceptions with at least 10 community members each, by ensuring community members are kept involved and informed about CAR’s work and the youth service programme goals specifically. The youth will be required to bring this feedback to CAR.
  • Send 50 additional youth to Nutroceutical agent training, whereby they acquire basic entrepreneurialship skills, understanding of the product, sales techniques, HIV information and the link between ‘positive’ living and nutrition. Thereafter, to place them as agents (either individually or in teams) under Africa Foods, in order to generate an income as nutroceutical agents in the community.
  • CARE will endeavour to raise the funds necessary to keep 50% of the youth in either field worker (earning R500 per month honourarium) or team-leader (earning R1800 per month) positions within the organisation. We will also continue and expand the programme in years 2 and 3, leading to an extension of our skill base and thus allowing us to extend our services into other communities

  • Juvenile offenders from Newclare and Jhb courts to be engaged in victim offender conferencing or diversionary programmes;
  • Participants to obtain 120 credits towards a qualification in child and youth care;

Project Description

This is a 13 month training programme targeting unemployed graduates with agriculture-oriented qualifications. The programme is intended to be an on the job training with the aim of developing these young people for careers as farmers or employment by various agricultural concerns. The programme will first be piloted at a farm in Ermelo in Mpumalanga and, if successful, be rolled out to other parts of the country. The main thrust is on developing agricultural entrepreneurs, although participants will be equipped to access jobs as well.

Objectives/Results

To develop young agriculture entrepreneurs and potential farm managers, and to expose unemployed youth with an interest in the red meat industry through a hands on approach to real red meat production. Participants will graduate with a business plan that they can use to apply for funding to set up their own farms. The success of the project will be measured against the number of participants who set up their own farms or link up with other LRAD projects as managers or development facilitators.

Leadership and entrepreneurship in agriculture programme (leap)

Project Description

This is a 13 month training programme targeting unemployed graduates with agriculture, commerce or law qualifications. They will receive training in Rural Development Planning, Development Economics, Strategic Management in Agribusiness and Agriculture Marketing. Training will take place at Pretoria University in 4 blocks of 2 weeks each. Candidates will acquire work experience from various Agribusinesses in the country that have committed their willing to host and employ and employ programme participants. The focus of this programme is strategic agribusiness management and entrepreneurship preparation.

To train unemployed youth in agribusiness management in preparation for their employment in strategic management positions in agribusinesses, and to contribute towards the attainment of a national objective of achieving equity in the agribusiness sector. The project will be judged to be successful if all candidates successfully complete the Advanced Certificate in Agribusiness Management with Pretoria University, complete work experience within the agribusiness environment and lastly, if 95% of the candidates secure full time employment in 3 months after graduation from the programme.

The NSA EQUIP programme is a bridging course designed to assist Black graduate Sponsored Students in the field of chartered accountancy to gain entry into a Certificate of Theory in Accounting (CTA) equivalent course and to provide them with practical work experience and with the life skills and competencies that will enhance their employability. The Service Provider will provide follow-up and after-care to the sponsored students.

Objectives/Results

The programme will be judged successful if it is successfully registered as a Learnership and therefore access additional resources from the BANKSETA.

On successful completion of the first learning phase, candidate will receive a Higher Certificate in Financial Markets and Instruments (NQF Level 5) – currently being re-registered as a National Diploma in Financial Markets and Instruments on NQF Level 6.

Exit opportunities exist after this first learning phase but all candidates have to finish the second phase as well.

It is widely believed that successful completion of the second phase (Higher Diploma in Financial Markets and Instruments accredited at NQF Level 7) will open the doors for all programme participants. It is also believed that whether students pass exams of not, they will access meaningful employment due to the practical nature of the training and experience acquired. Those who fail will be assisted to find full time employment and measures will be put in place to help the rewrite exams. It must be emphasised that the continuous assessment approach will also function as an early warning indicator to identify learners that may experience problems with final examinations.

The project seeks to enhance the employability of unemployed black matriculants between the ages of 18 and 26 by employing an integrated approach to IT skills development. The project is unique in that it proposes to multi-skill youth for employment in various networking environments, integrate life and professional skills onto the technical training component, provide relevant work experience and lastly, place graduates in meaningful employment.

This is a national project. Candidates have been selected from all 9 provinces especially from rural areas. Training will take place at SITA in Gauteng.

Project Description

The project provides high-level technical and professional skills training to unemployed tertiary graduates. Participants will be exposed to Life Skills training, Case Management, Work Experience and will be placed in meaningful employment in the Public Service. The project will ensure that the ICT capacity of the public service is enhanced and therefore, improve delivery of services by the public service.

To provide unemployed youth with valuable IT skills and experience that can improve their employability and self employment. The aim is to learn from this project and launch more internship projects in the Public Service.

Umsobomvu contributed to the Science, Engineering and Technology Week Career Fair, an initiative of the Department of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology. The Career Fair profiled Science, Engineering and Technology to learners from Gauteng schools. It provided an opportunity for Umsobomvu to develop a supportive strategy in regard to school to work transition for learners in these three areas. Umsobomvu contributed to the transport costs of getting learners to the Fair.

Project Description

In partnership with the Digital Opportunities Trust (DOT), a Canadian NGO that promotes IT demand and training at community-level, UYF is conceptualising a NetCorps South Africa project. 250 community leaders (unemployed youth who demonstrate leadership qualities) will be trained over 3 years. Training will focus on life and professional skills, Information Systems, Business Design and Project Management, Business Plan Preparation and other specialised IT competencies.

The project will be based in disadvantaged communities where there is reasonable IT infrastructure available. Participants will receive applied training and then serve their communities as interns for a minimum period of 6 months during which further training and support will be provided. Communities will benefit from this by having their IT needs assessed and solutions recommended. Interns will work with local organisations and government to deliver integrated services. Where these exist, they will work with Multi Purpose Community Centres, Universal Services Agency’s Telecentres and other community centres.

Ipelegeng Youth Leadership Development Programme is based in Soweto and has been working with young people since 1991.     The project will assist potential and existing young entrepreneurs to acquire innovative business support services by accessing a voucher from the allocating agent which can then be used to access Business Development Services (BDS) (e.g. mentoring, business planning, tax advice) from an accredited service provider; and to enhance public and private sector institutions to offer quality demand driven BDS.

        Project Description

        The voluntary youth service enabled the youth to develop a culture of service in developing their communities, while learning skills and gaining work experience. The project involved the renovation and painting of 9 community buildings in the 9 provinces of South Africa.

        Objectives/Results

        The purpose of Umsobomvu’s voluntary youth service was to inculcate in the youth to understand their important role of volunteerism in the development of their communities and to assist them to participate constructively in community development, nation-building and to develop a pro-social behaviour. Furthermore, it aims to support individual transformation through the growth of civic awareness in the young people involved and through their experience of service and the development of their skills.
