Period: 30 Aug till present

Acting Chairperson: Mr D A A Olifant
Period: 13 Aug – 7 Oct

Acting Chairperson: Ms E Thabethe
Period: 19 Feb – 25 Jun

MISSION: According to the Rules of the National Assembly, the PC on Labour, like other portfolio committees, must deal with bills and other matters falling within its portfolio as referred to it by the National Assembly or in terms of legislation. It may hold a public hearing on a particular matter and may amend legislation. The Committee must maintain oversight of the relevant Ministry and Department. It may make recommendations concerning any organ of state, constitutional institution or other body or institution.

VISION: The PC on Labour set out to step up its level of oversight of institutions falling within its portfolio during 2002 once it had finalised the legislation for the year.

OBJECTIVES: The Committee planned to undertake a number of national study visits to labour centres in Gauteng, and to examine occupational health and safety conditions at an engineering plant in the Western Cape.
