PLANNED ACTIVITIES FOR PUBLIC SERVICE WEEK: 25-28 SEPTEMBER 2001

Public Service Week is part of an ongoing, larger Revitalisation of "Batho Pele" (People First) campaign which aims to build a greater sense of morale in public servants, a greater sense of pride in the Public Service, patriotism and loyalty, ethics and a higher commitment to delivering quality services. The campaign hopes to mobilise the collective forces in the interest of public service transformation and foster a working environment conducive to higher levels of functioning and productivity. The theme of this leg of the campaign is 'I'm proud to serve you'. Various key activities have been planned (listed below) and departments and institutions may engage in additional activities, which they feel may also be in line with the theme of the Week.

a. direct and indirect customers of the Public Service (external audience).

b. public servants (internal audience)

ACTION PLAN

Theme: 'I'm proud to serve you'

1. OPEN WEEK FOR DEPARTMENTS

a. The public is encouraged to visit government departments and institutions

b. The private sector, unions and community organisations may get involved in the open week but not for sales or advertising purposes

c. The idea here is for the general public to take tours around their preferred departments and institutions

d. A suggestion box will be made available for the public to forward their suggestions

e. departments may on one of the days of the Week also target a specific area which is experiencing a service backlog by for example deploying additional human resources to deal more speedily with matters for that day

f. Departments and institutions will organise tours during times that suit them

2. IMBIZOS

a. Interpersonal engagements between MECs, HoDs, heads of institutions and the public they service, particularly frontline customers and staff

b. The idea here is for government to interact with its public on ground level - & through the media etc.

c. Managers will also be encouraged to ‘work’ in frontline or other line positions at certain times during the week to give them a first hand sense of the working environments of public servants in various positions

 

3. PUBLICITY CAMPAIGN

a. MECs and HoDs to communicate 'Batho Pele’ (People First) through local media with the aim of reinforcing these principles

b. The idea here is to increase the Batho Pele profile

c. Alternate media will also be engaged

d. Distribute publicity material (Batho Pele Posters and Events Posters)
