COMMITTEE STUDYTOURS TO NORTHERN CAPE: PLANNING

SUMMARY
The Committee discussed the logistics around the oversight visits to the Northern Cape of the Select Committee on Education and Recreation, and the Select Committee on Social Services. The Committee went over the itinerary and made minor changes to the programme. The Committee decided to drive rather than fly, and to divide the trip into two Committee teams to travel to Kimberley and Port Nolloth.

MINUTES
The Chairperson announced that the Committee had been scheduled to be briefed by the Department of Education on its Memorandum of Understanding with the Department of Arts and Culture. Both Ministers had requested that the briefing be rescheduled as the structures for the Memorandum were still being formalised.

The Chairperson suggested Members instead discuss their planned oversight visit to the Northern Cape, for instance whether they should fly or drive. Mr M Sulliman (ANC) suggested that driving would be a better option because the local landing strip was very small and the journey would be too uncomfortable. Mr J Thlagale (UCDP) supported this idea, and it was agreed.

The Chairperson then divided the delegation into two groups. The Education and Recreation Select Committe would travel to Kimberley, and the Social Services Select Committee would travel to Port Nolloth, led by Ms J Masilo.

Ms N Manjezi (Committee Controller) went through the itineraries of each team. Members made suggestions about accommodation and rental vehicles. Members would be able to attend Women’s Day celebrations during the trip.
