SUMMARY
The Committee adopted its 2004 Annual Report and the reports of its oversight visits.

MINUTES
The Committee adopted the following reports after it had made minor technical changes: report on visit to Pollsmoor Juvenile Detention Centre on 15 October 2004; report on visit to Lindelani Place of Safety in Stellenbosch on 19 October 2004, Committee report on recommended solutions to prison overcrowding, and the 2004 Committee Annual Report. The Committee also discussed its draft report on the two fire incidents at Pollsmoor Prison that led to the death of six inmates. The Chairperson stated that they needed to carefully consider the report and make solid recommendations when they met again in early 2005.

The Committee agreed to visit C-Max Prison in Pretoria on 18 November 2004 to discuss work-related issues with management. This would allow the Committee to obtain first-hand information and be in a better position to draw up a report on happenings there.
