Meeting Summary

The Committee met for the election of the new Chairperson of the Committee. The Committee Secretary conducted the proceedings.

Mr S Mthimunye (ANC, Mpumalanga) was elected Chairperson, without any objections.

Meeting report

Mr Gurshwyn Dixon, Committee Secretary, welcomed all present at the meeting. He said the purpose of the meeting was to elect the Chairperson of the Committee, and asked Members to put forward their nominations.

Mr J Mthethwa (ANC, KwaZulu-Natal) nominated Mr S Mthimunye (ANC, Mpumalanga).

Ms T Wana (ANC, Eastern Cape) seconded the nomination.

Mr D Monakedi (ANC, Limpopo) supported the nomination.

The Committee elected Mr Mthimunye as Chairperson of the Committee, without any objections.

Mr Mthimunye thanked the Committee Secretary for facilitating the election process. He thanked the Members of the Committee for believing in him to lead the Committee. It was an honour for him, as the Member from Mpumalanga and from the ANC, to be elected as Chairperson. He committed himself to be a “team person” in whatever working role he performed, with a particular focus on meeting deadlines. He was looking forward to working with all the Members to give their best in realising the mandate of the Committee.

He had had a short briefing session with the outgoing Chairperson, Mr D Ximbi (ANC, Western Cape), who had taken him through a number of issues. He had also had a short meeting with the Committee Secretary yesterday, and would get a briefing as well from all the Members of the Committee.

The Chairperson asked the Committee Secretary what the reason for the absence of the opposition party Members was. Had they apologised for their absence from the meeting?

Mr Dixon said one Member from Gauteng was at a briefing in the Gauteng legislature. The other two Members had sent apologies this morning indicating constituency business that they had to attend to.

The meeting was adjourned.
