Meeting Summary

The Committee met briefly to elect a Chairperson for the fifth Parliament. Mr N Godi (APC) was elected unopposed. The Committee’ sLegacy Report was handed out to Members so that they could get acquainted with the work that had been completed as well as the outstanding issues that needed to be brought forward to the current Committee.

Meeting report

Election of the Chairperson
Mr Ben Kali, Committee Secretary, greeted everyone and outlined the process for the election of the Chairperson and asked members to confirm their names on the Committee register. Thereafter, he asked for nominations to fill the posititon of Committee Chairperson.

Mr M Booi (ANC) nominated Mr N Godi (APC) to be the Chairperson.

Mr G Tseke (ANC) seconded the nomination of Mr Godi.

There were no objections raised.

Mr Godi was duly elected to be the Chairperson of the Committee. As that was the only matter on the agenda he noted that the Committee on Chairpersons would probably give direction on how Committees would proceed. There was also a legacy report that would assist members understand the work that had been completed by the previous Committee as well as the outstanding issues that needed to be brought forward to the current Committee. The strategic plan the previous Committee had used could be used as a template for the current Committee’s planning going forward as well. The Committee Secretary would keep all the members abreast of all developments, after the Chairperson’s meeting from then on.

Mr R Lees (DA) said the DA would give the Chairperson its full support in carrying out the mandate of the Committee.

Mr Booi also reiterated Mr Lees’ sentiments.

Mr M Hlengwa (IFP) congratulated the Chairperson on his election and reiterated similar sentiments expressed by the ANC and the DA.

Ms K Litchfield-Tshabalala (EFF) also congratulated the Chairperson on his election and said her party was there to work.

The Chairperson emphasised his own commitment to the mandate of the Committee and noted that, fortunately the Committee’s work would be determined by the Auditor-General. As there were budgets that were to be passed soon, the Committee’s work was to deal with how the monies had been spent, in a year’s time.

The meeting was then adjourned.
