Election of Chairperson

Meeting report

The Secretary of the Select Committee, Mr A Bawa, introduced himself and explained that the agenda of the meeting is to elect a chairperson of the portfolio committee on telecommunications and postal services. He then called for nominations, saying that the nominee(s) will be given an opportunity to accept or reject nomination.

Mr J P Parkies (ANC) nominated Mr O Sefako (ANC) for chairperson.

Mr Bawa asked if there are any seconders.

Ms E Prins (ANC) seconded the nomination.

Mr Bawa asked whether there are any objections and also asked for further nominations.

There were none.

He asked if Mr Sefako accepts the nomination.

Mr Sefako said he accepts the nomination.

Mr Bawa officially declared Mr O Sefako as the elected Chairperson of the Select committee on Land and Mineral resources.

The members applauded him.

Mr Sefako took the chairperson seat and greeted the members. He said he was humbled by the nomination for chairperson. He said the committee must work together as they have been charged with a responsibility to address and redress the imbalances created by the previous system. He emphasized that it will take the collective effort of all members to achieve this in order to better the lives of all South Africans. He thanked the members once more.
