Election of Chairperson
Ms Kholiswa Phasiya, Committee Secretary, presided over the election of the Chairperson. She explained the election process and indicated that it was underpinned by rule 129 of the National Assembly Rules.   

Ms L Mnganga-Gcabasha (ANC) nominated Ms N Mafu (ANC) to be the Chairperson of the Committee.  Mr H Mmemezi (ANC) seconded the nomination of Ms Mafu. Ms Mafu accepted the nomination.

With no other nominations, Ms Mafu was declared the new Chairperson of the Committee.

Opening Remarks by Chairperson
The Chairperson acknowledged the nomination and the responsibility given to her.  She hoped that the Members would work well together as they would be overseeing one of the most important departments (Department of Human Settlements). The Portfolio Committee was one of the critical Committees in the National Assembly as it spoke to what the people of South Africa needed. The support that Members would give to one another would ensure that the Committee functioned effectively.

The Chairperson urged Members to attend training workshop so that they knew how to handle the budget vote.

Members congratulated the Chairperson on her appointment and introduced themselves.
