Meeting Summary

The Chairperson advised the Committee that the South African Football Players Union (SAFPU) had informed him that it would not be at the meeting to present a briefing its in the Premier Soccer League (PSL). The union had been invited to the COSATU conference.

Members briefly considered and adopted outstanding minutes and its programme for the fourth term.
Committee members expressed concern about some of the scheduling but were encouraged by the invitations of different groups to present to the Committee. There was also discussion about the upcoming African Cup of Nations games occurring in South Africa and the lack of promotion.

Meeting report

Announcement
The Chairperson advised the Committee that the South African Football Players Union (SAFPU) had informed him that it would not be at the meeting to present a briefing its in the Premier Soccer League (PSL). SAFPU had been invited to the COSATU conference and thus had to cancel their appearance in front of the Committee. SAFU had apologised profusely for their absence. Instead the Committee would look at outstanding minutes and go over the Committee’s Schedule for the rest of the year.

The Chairperson tabled the minutes for consideration.

Mr M Dikgacwi (ANC) and Mr G Mackenzie (COPE) both brought up corrections concerning the spelling of their names in the minutes.

Members were satisfied with the remainder of the document and approved it as amended.

The Chairperson tabled the minutes for consideration.

Mr Mackenzie again pointed out that his name was not spelled correctly.

Members were satisfied with the remainder of the document and approved it as amended.

Welcoming of Para-Olympians to Parliament
The Chairperson then spoke about the importance of the welcoming and the congratulating statements to the Para-Olympians on their visit to Parliament.

Members appreciated the Chairperson’s reference to Para-Olympians and asked him to think about having disabled members of Parliament be represented at the congratulatory statements.

Committee’s Fourth Term Programme
Mr Lichakane Phori, Committee Secretary, and the Chairperson then went over the upcoming Programme for the Committee, which included visits from the Auditor General and a briefing by the Olympic Committee on London 2012.

Members expressed concern over some of the scheduled dates of meetings feeling that some of them may coincide with other meetings. They resolved the issue, understanding that the conflicting meetings were either typos and occurred with presenters that could not be there on any other day. The Committee also reiterated their approval of some of the future presenters

The Committee approved the programme.

2013 African Cup of Nations
There Committee briefly discussed the upcoming African Cup of Nations soccer tournament which had been given to South Africa after the chosen country, Libya, was deemed unfit to host the event. Members felt that there had been insufficient promotions preparedness for the games and that the Committee should hold meetings with people from sectors of the Police and Transport so they could ensure the proper organization for the continental event-taking place in January.

The Chairperson commented on the overlapping of meetings stating that nothing could be done if it occurred. He adjourned the meeting and welcomed everyone to tea.
